Mandatory evacuations have been issued for homes near the Day Fire in Modoc County.

The blaze is burning off Day Road, two miles north of the Day community. The mandatory evacuations are occurring from Sneider Ranch Road to the north end of Day Road.

The fire, caused by lightning strikes Wednesday afternoon has spread to 2,500 acres and is only 5 percent contained.

Officials say the fire is challenging crews because it is in mixed brush with heavy timber, along with continued threat of thunderstorms with numerous lightning strikes and erratic winds.
