A Sacramento County man accused of trying to kill a four-year-old Chico toddler waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday and will stand trial.
William Brainard, 59, was arrested in May at his home in Sacramento County and charged with attempted murder and arson.
The charges stem from an incident in Butte County during which Brainard allegedly set an incendiary device outside a four-year-old's window on Losse Way in Chico. The device caused a fire and woke the child's father, who managed to get everyone out of the home safely.
Investigators learned the child was the subject of a custody battle between the child's mother and father and the mother had recently ended a relationship with Brainard. Investigators believe Brainard was seeking revenge on the child's mother.
During a search of Brainard's residence and vehicle, investigators found materials consistent with those used to make the incendiary device.
Brainard will be further arraigned August 5 and faces 20 years to life in prison. He remains in custody on $1.5 million bail.
