A 25-year-old Olivehurst man was seriously injured after driving off the road and colliding into both sides of a drainage ditch. The man has yet to be identified pending notification of kin.
At around 3:45 a.m. this morning, a black 2005 Honda Civic was driving southbound on Arboga road in the Olivehurst area reportedly at a high speeds. As the Civic drove through a left curve in the road, the car was unable to stay in its lane and ran off the right shoulder. According to CHP’s report, the Civic drove into a dried up drainage ditch, colliding with both the east and west sides of the ditch several times while continuing to drive southbound. When the vehicle finally stopped, the engine caught fire.
A resident in the area then reportedly ran to the vehicle with a fire extinguisher, keeping the flames under control until emergency responders arrived. Sgt. Michael McCarthy of CHP indicated the driver suffered a broken leg and possibly a dislocated shoulder. He was transported to Rideout Memorial Hospital for treatment. Sgt Jackson also stated the driver may have been impaired and alcohol appears to be a factor in the accident. CHP is still awaiting the official toxicology results.
