Fire investigators are looking into a deadly house fire in Magalia Wednesday morning as possibly suspicious.
Neighbors say this was the third fire at the home in recent weeks.
"I tried everything I could to get the gentleman out," Marion Prevatt said.
Marion Prevatt says he first noticed the fire at his neighbors home when his dog's started barking around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday.
"I ran over that way to the front porch, and about that time there was like an explosion, something went boom," Prevatt said.
Prevatt says despite the danger he went into the Drexel Drive home hoping to save his friend Bill.
"I got close to the ice box towards his backroom, and it got so hot I was choking out three different times," Prevatt said.
Unfortunately, Prevatt couldn't get to his friend and neither could firefighters.
The man was found dead in the bedroom.
Firefighters say it appears the fire started in that area, but are still working to determine what may have sparked the blaze.
"We are considering all possible causes of fire, of what could have caused the fire," Butte County CalFIRE Captain Joe Tapia said.
The home remained taped off for much of the day Wednesday as fire investigators combed through the debris.
Investigators are familiar with the home saying a smaller fire at the home last week remains under investigation.
Neighbor's say a third fire was extinguished without the fire department's help days earlier.
As fire investigators have asked sheriff's detectives to help as they work to determine the cause of Wednesday’s blaze.
"The sheriff's department did assist us in doing some of the interviews and investigation just to gather facts," Tapia said.
The sheriff's office is conducting a death investigation through the coroner's office and has not released the man's name, saying they are still working to positively identify his remains.
