Shasta County officials have identified the man killed in the Bully Fire in Ono four months ago.

Cal Fire crews found the body of Jesus Arellano Garcia, 35, of Michoacán, Mexico on Wednesday July 16 in a dry ravine off Platina Road. The Shasta County Coroner's Office said the body was so badly burned the identification process was very difficult.

The man suspected of starting the Bully Fire, 37-year-old Freddie Alexander Smoke III, has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter.

Smoke was allegedly operating a large rental truck to deliver soil amendments to an illegal marijuana grow site in the area of Roaring Creek Road and Sargent Road in Ono and the fire started when Smoke operated the truck off road, in rough, grass covered terrain. The trucks exhaust system contacted the dry grass and ignited the vegetation, burning 12,661 acres.

Smoke was arrested and posted bail after original charges were filed, but he failed to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on August 22. Authorities say Smoke has ties to Redding, Sacramento and Los Angeles, as well as Indiana and Illinois. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
