A busy intersection on East Avenue was partially closed off for about an hour this afternoon as police investigated an accident involving a bicyclist. His condition is serious but not life threatening. They say had the bicyclist been hit even a second sooner, that may not have been the case.

Police are still investigating the cause of an accident that sent a bicyclist to the hospital with major injuries.

Just after 4:30 police and emergency crews responded to the 200 block of W East Avenue where a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle.

Police have identified the driver as 86 year old Gumercindo Alvarez Perez of Chico. Preliminary reports show that Perez ran a red light and struck the bicyclist as he was in the crosswalk.

According to Perez, the sun impaired his vision and he thought he had a green light. The bicyclist who has not been identified was transferred to Enloe with injuries to his head and legs. He was not wearing a helmet.

No charges have been filed as they are still gathering witness statements. The Chico Police department wants to stress the importance of bike safety. They caution anyone on a bike to not assume that a driver can see you.
