A man was booked into the Butte County Jail for Felony child endangerment after placing his two year old son in the care of a stranger.

The Oroville Police Department was called to a Motel 6 on Montgomery Street Saturday night after reports of a man wandering around, possibly under the influence of a narcotic. Once there, they found Joshua Johnson, who claimed to be in search of his son, who he’d left in the care of a stranger. Joshua explained to the officers that he was new to the area, had met the man just a day before the incident and asked him to watch Joshua’s son while Joshua attended a sobriety meeting. The two men were supposed to reunite at a different motel immediately after the meeting.

Joshua could not provide the officers with the name of the male subject, and his story changed multiple times. However, over the course of investigation they were able to locate the man, who then gave them the whereabouts of Joshua’s son. The child was being cared for by another person at the time.

Joshua was placed under arrest and booked in the Butte County Jail. His bail is set at $50,000.

His son was placed in the temporary custody of Children Service division.

The Oroville Police Department Investigation Unit asks anyone with information about the incident to contact: (530) 538-2448.
