Man Identified in Fatal Vehicle vs Pedestrian Accident

(UPDATE) 3:20 p.m.- The Shasta County Coroner’s Office has identified the man struck by a car on Hwy 273 this morning as 32-year-old Armando Verdugo.

CHP was called to a vehicle versus pedestrian accident around 5:18 a.m. on the northbound lane of Hwy 273 near Latona Road. Investigators state Verdugo was walking northbound on the number two lane when a white minivan also traveling north struck Verdugo from behind. The driver reportedly attempted to avoid Verdugo, but by the time they saw him it was too late. Investigators also state Verdugo was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident.

The accident is still being investigated by CHP, but charges against the driver are not anticipated.

- A vehicle versus pedestrian accident on Highway 273 in Shasta County has claimed the life of an Anderson man.

It happened on northbound Highway 273 near Over Land Drive in Anderson around 5:20 Thursday morning. The CHP says 75-year-old Alice Spuhler of Red Bluff was driving a white Chrysler minivan to the hospital for her husband Ralph's planned heart surgery. The couple came to a white man walking northbound in one of the lanes with his back to traffic. They didn't have time to stop and hit him, resulting in his death. He is believed to be around 25-years-old. We do not know his identity at this time.

The CHP website says northbound traffic is being diverted to Latona, then to East Side Road.

Authorities say that drugs and alcohol were not suspected in the incident and hope to have the northbound lanes open by 7:30am.
