The man shot and killed by California Highway Patrol officers near Dunsmuir Thursday has been identified as a 25-year-old Nevada man.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man as Ryan Daniel Vrenon, 25, of Carson City, Nevada.

Authorities say an officer stopped to check on Vrenon on the side of southbound Interstate 5, near Weed Boulevard, around 6 a.m.

The officer noticed a weapon inside the car and Vrenon suddenly sped away.

After running over a spike strip near Mott Road, about halfway between Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta, Vrenon opened fire on officers. Police returned fire, killing Vrenon.

Southbound I-5 was closed for most of the day Thursday.
