A man in Redding is dead after suffering fatal injuries in an overnight crash.
The accident happened around 3:30 Wednesday morning at the interchange between Northbound I-5 and Westbound Highway 44.
Police say Michael Leighton, 45, of Redding died at the scene, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
“At this point in time, we are not sure why he left the roadway, but he ran off the west side of the roadway at a culvert ditch, overturned multiple times, and he was ejected. The ejection caused him to sustain fatal injuries during the collision,” said Officer Mike Cheeseman of the California Highway Patrol.
It appears Leighton was not wearing a seat belt. Officers do not believe alcohol was involved in the crash.
The Highway 44 interchange is currently open, but there are lane restrictions in place.
