A 62-year-old man is facing arson and attempted murder charges after he allegedly tried to set a security guard on fire.

The suspect, who police say is Fernando Lujan, a transient, was arrested on suspicion of starting a fire behind the Old Sierra Market in Chico around 11 p.m.

According to a Chico Police Department news release, Lujan reportedly threw gasoline on a security guard and then lit the ground in front of the man.

Police say the guard used pepper spray to keep Lujan from throwing more gas at him.

After being treated for injuries sustained from the pepper spray, Lujan was booked into the Butte County Jail.
