Man arrested for attempted robbery of downtown 7-Eleven

Chico police arrested a man early Wednesday morning after he was seen pacing outside the downtown 7-Eleven while holding a knife and wearing a brown paper bag over his head.

Police arrested 23-year-old transient Steven Brannon on suspicion of attempted robbery, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest.

According to a news release from the Chico Police Department, officers were called to the 7-Eleven because of a suspicious person around 1:45 a.m. When they arrived Brannon fled on a bike, but he was arrested a short time later at the intersection of 3rd and Flume Streets.

A subsequent investigation revealed that before officers arrived Brannon had scaled a fence near the 7-Eleven and entered the store through an unlocked door. An employee found Brannon, who was still holding the knife and wearing the bag, trying to hide. The employee asked Brannon to leave, and he complied.

Once Brannon exited the store he saw police arrving and fled. He was booked into the Butte County Jail.
