LOS ANGELES (AP) - Saying "this is a quest that Los Angeles was made for," L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti says his city is "the world's greatest stage" as it prepares to win the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Just hours after the city council in Los Angeles gave the mayor the right to negotiate with the U.S. Olympic Committee, the USOC announced that L.A. will be its bid city in the attempt to secure the 2024 Summer Olympics
That's a preliminary but important step. The International Olympic Committee will pick the host city in 2017.
USOC CEO Scott Blackmun announced the selection with L.A. replacing Boston, which pulled out of contention last month.
L.A. is up against Rome, Paris, Hamburg, Germany, and Budapest, Hungary, for the right to host the Games. L.A. hosted the Summer Games in 1932 and 1984.
