LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say two men were fatally shot after one of them raised a handgun in the direction of four Sheriff's deputies trying to conduct a traffic stop in east Los Angeles.

Los Angeles county Sheriff's Lt. John Corina says the incident began at 2:20 a.m. with a report from a man who said two guys in a car pointed a handgun at him.

Corina says when deputies tried to stop the car the passenger got out with a handgun. The driver then pulled into a driveway and exited to stand next to the other.

When one man pointed the handgun in the deputies' direction, all four deputies fired their guns, killing both men. A handgun was recovered.

The deputies are on desk duty pending an investigation, as per department policy.
