LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Police Department has released the names of a sergeant and two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a homeless man during a confrontation on Skid Row.
The department said Thursday that Sgt. Chand Syed and Officers Francisco Martinez and Daniel Torres discharged their firearms during the March 1 confrontation that erupted as they attempted to detain the man for investigation of robbery. Other officers at the scene did not fire their service weapons.
The killing of 43-year-old Charly Leundeu Keunang, a Cameroon national known as Africa, was recorded on cellphone video and prompted several protests.
Investigators say Keunang became combative, made a grab for the gun of a rookie policeman and was shot by three other officers.
The officers were placed on leave, pending investigation.
