Longtime Chico resident leaves large donation for police dogs

The Chico Police Department is set to receive more than $45,000 for new police dogs, thanks to a generous donation.

The donation comes from longtime Chico resident Virginia Jordan, who has donated half of her estate to the department's K9 unit. The Chico City Council is expected to accept the $45,102 donation on Tuesday night.

According to the Chico City Council agenda, Jordan, who passed away in 2013, left the money for "the exclusive purpose of purchasing, training and caring for police dogs."

The Chico Police Department currently has two canine teams, and is expected to gain at least two more after Jordan's donation is accepted.

K9 units are commonly used to enhance the capabilities of their partner officers by providing protection, apprehending suspects, conducting searches for suspects in buildings, and tracking suspects who have fled.
