LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Five buildings at Long Beach City College have been evacuated as police investigate a possible explosive device.

School spokesman John Pope says police are focusing their investigation Thursday on an empty car parked on Carson Street in front of the Liberal Arts Campus.

Pope says students and staff have been escorted to the northern edge of the campus.

Classes beginning at noon or earlier were canceled. School officials are evaluating whether to cancel afternoon classes as well.

More than 26,000 students attend the school in the fall and spring but fewer people are on campus during the current winter session.
