A Chico high school athlete is making his dreams come true by accepting a scholarship to compete at the next level. Action News Now's Ross Field caught up with David Leyva and brings you his story.
David Leyva was one of the most successful wrestlers at Chico High this past season. But prep competition has come to an end and the next chapter in his life is about to begin as he's accepted a scholarship to suit up for Williams Baptist.
"That has always been a goal you know, what I've strive for to eventually get a scholarship to go and wrestle somewhere amazing," says Leyva.
Located in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, Williams Baptist is an NAIA school.
Up until last year, men's wrestling did not exist there, but the first-year program managed to pin down a lot of success in its inaugural season.
"They actually took 22nd in the nation for NAIA," Leyva said. "I'm super excited to go out there, meet my coaches and make some new friends and get to wrestle out there."
Leyva, who heads to Arkansas in late August, will bring with him a solid resume as he finished his prep career with a record of 115-51. The 150-pounder is a two-time state qualifier, A Northern Section champ and a Masters runner-up. Pretty impressive when you consider he started wrestling in eighth grade.
"Wrestling is just like life it's a roller coaster, you have your ups and downs, wins and losses, but you have got to fight through it," Leyva said. "Hard work is all you need, if you work hard you're going to be successful so that's what I did. I just put as much work into wrestling as possible."
