Earlier this month, the North Valley Hockey and Sports Complex in Hamilton City sent two teams to participate in the AAU Jr. Olympics in Las Vegas, and those two teams rolled up the competition.

The Chico Firebirds 18U squad went 5-0-1 to capture a gold medal in their division for the second consecutive year.

Some of the players were also selected to Team USA for international competition.

The Chico Firebirds 16U team went 5-1-1 in the worldwide tournament as they took down teams from as far away as Great Britain.

The 16U team is a true underdog story. They were formed from scratch about three years ago as everyone who tried out made the team. Through hard work and perseverance they've turned themselves into a force to be reckoned with on the roller hockey rink.

"It was nice to see, I started with them three years ago, they could barely skate around and it's nice to see it all come together," said Taylor Rand, the Chico Firebirds 16U head coach.

"It was great! After playing for that team for so long it just felt good finally winning a tournament. Every practice we came and worked hard and our coach helped us get better and we just beneffited and won," said Will Robinson, a member of the Chico Firebirds 18U team.

"What I really enjoyed about our victory in Las Vegas is it was a complete team effort and when you bring a bunch of guys together and they work together as a team, I think that says a lot about their abilities as teammates," said Jim Wackerman, the head coach of Chico Firebirds 18U team.
