A local MMA fighter is gearing up for a big bout.

But win or lose, Paradise resident Jason Powell has found a passion and he's going to do whatever it takes to continue fighting his way to the top.

"Literally, MMA has become my whole life," said Jason Powell.

Jason Powell has been a mixed martial arts fighter for two years, and even he knows it's a little crazy.

"When you really step back and think about it, doing this is crazy, I'm fist-fighting someone in a cage," said Powell.

But the 21-year-old still gets up every morning to train. These days, as he preps for a big fight, he's training three times a day. For him, it's worth every second, even when he's taking punches.

"I never see it as violence, I'm not a violent guy at all, I've never been in a fight in my life outside of the cage and I really just want to show everyone what I got and how much I've improved," said Powell.

Powell, who goes by the nickname "The Gentleman," is a relative newcomer to the sport, but he's already made a splash. In six career matches, he's 5-1.

On Saturday, September 13th, Powell is set to fight Sacramento's David Wright in the 150-pound featherweight division as part of the West Coast Fighting Championship 11 undercard.

"I"m just really looking to put on show and get the win," said Powell.

Powell says he's ready and feels like he's come a long way from his first steps in the world of MMA. This fight represents a step to bigger things in the sports, but Powell won't get ahead of himself. Whatever happens, he'll keep happily taking punches, and dishing out a few too.
