Local Church Caught in Middle of Homeless Controversy

A local church is facing opposition for feeding the homeless on Sundays.

The Orchard Church has been hosting “Church on the Street" and feeding people in the downtown Chico plaza for more than five years now.

At last night's city council meeting, Councilmember Sean Morgan sponsored a request to take a look at Orchard Church's permit to feed the homeless.

Local property owner Wayne Cook filed an appeal of their permit approval by the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission about a week ago.

Mark Herrera is part of the commission, and sees it as a homeless issue.

“This small faction of individuals who in my opinion just don't like homeless population…they couldn't kick them off the sidewalks so now they're trying to starve them out of downtown,” Herrera said.

The city council has the final word. They'll either uphold or deny the church's permit on November 19th.
