The League of Women Voters of Butte County is hosting an upcoming “Lunch and Learn” discussion focusing on the “Deregulation of Campaign Finance in the U.S.”.
The guest speaker will be Diana Dwyre, Professor of Political science at CSU, Chico. She will address how recent decisions by non-elected officials in the courts and the executive branch have resulted in a swift move toward deregulation of campaign finance activities in the U.S. There is much controversy about the resulting changes, and little agreement among elected officials about whether to respond to the changed campaign finance landscape … which is characterized by an increase in outside spending and a decrease in disclosure.
Spurred by the “spending abuses” of congressional and presidential campaigns, the League of women Voters of the U.S. has sought to reform the campaign finance system since the 1970’s, to reduce the “dominance of special interests.”
The “Lunch and Learn” event is scheduled for Monday, February 24th from 12 – 1:30 p.m. at the Chico Branch of the Butte County Library, 1108 Sherman Avenue. The public is encouraged to attend with a sack lunch … if desired. Water and cookies will be provided. ###
