Chico resident Sharice Atkins was stunned when she received a phone call from the Chico Wal-Mart store early Monday morning letting her know that her layaway account had been paid off, by a complete stranger. " I was like thank you Jesus, cause we really needed it. We've had a hard year, and today was the last day to pay it off so that was a blessing", said Atkins.
Atkins' layaway bill totalled 145 dollars, and she's just one of many lucky recipients who have had their accounts paid off in the north state and across the nation by anonymous layaway angels, a nick name that has stuck since the act of kindness first began at a Kmart in Michigan. That's where a woman decided to pay off three random layaway accounts just to be generous. " It's nice to know that there's people out there that are willing to help other people", said Atkins. Her husband adds, " It's a blessing that somebody would go around and do this".
Kmart stores in both Chico and Paradise have had dozens of accounts paid off along with the Chico Wal-Mart. A Kmart store in Hayward even had an anonymous donor pay nearly 10,000 dollars, which paid off 63 layaway accounts. And as for those layaway angels, most don't even give their names, they just hope others continue to pay if forward. " A kind gesture goes a long way, and I'm glad it touched us".
