NEW YORK (AP) - A former New York City officer and his customs officer brother have been sentenced to three years in prison for smuggling guns into their native Philippines.
The Daily News of New York reports that Rex Maralit and his brother Wilfredo used their law enforcement credentials to buy military-grade weapons. They sent the arms to another brother in the Philippines. That brother is still on the lam, authorities say.
Brooklyn federal Judge Allyne Ross says the brothers traded in "some of the most powerful small arms in existence." But she considered their years of service.
Rex Maralit says he's should have known better and he promised not to repeat the conduct. His brother was a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in California, the newspaper reported.
