LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - The final Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo jet is scheduled to leave its Long Beach assembly plant on Sunday.

The Long Beach Press Telegram reports that many current and former Boeing employees are expected to gather Sunday to watch the military transport plane take off.

The ceremony will include a "fly over" of the soon-to-be shuttered assembly plant before the C-17 heads to one of Boeing's facilities in San Antonio.

Boeing announced two years ago that it didn't have enough foreign orders to justify keeping the Long Beach plant open.

The facility provided about 2,000 jobs and has been a backbone of the regional economy.

The program produced more than 250 planes for U.S. and international customers for more than two decades.
