A shocking image of Lake Oroville, showing the severity of California's drought, has been selected as one of TIME magazine's top 10 photos of 2014.

The photo was taken by a camera, attached to a drone, by Tomas van Houtryve. In the photograph, house boats are seen on Lake Oroville, which is currently 70 percent empty.

Among the other 10 photos selected were Ellen DeGeneres' star studded selfie at the Academy Awards, Journalist Jerome Sessini's haunting picture of Mayalsia Airline's Flight 17 crash and a photo by the New York Time's Daniel Berehulak showing two health workers in Liberia donning hazmat suits as they carry a small boy into a clinic.
