LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles police officer has pleaded not guilty to the videotaped assault of a suspect who was lying on the ground.

Officer Richard Garcia entered the plea Monday. He faces up to three years in jail if convicted.

Prosecutors say officers chased a man they thought resembled a robbery suspect last October in South Los Angeles.

In a federal lawsuit, Clinton Alford Jr. says he was biking when a car pulled up and a man shouted for him to stop without identifying himself as a policeman.

Alford said he kept pedaling until someone grabbed his bike, then he ran.

Alford says he surrendered but was beaten and kicked while being held on the ground by other officers and even after being handcuffed.
