LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles fire commissioners have approved a new policy designed to prevent nepotism in hiring.
City News Service says the commission on Tuesday approved a conflict-of-interest protocol. It prohibits Fire Department employees from taking part in the selection of new firefighters if they have a friend or family member who's applied.
Anyone perceived to have a vested interest in choosing a particular applicant also is barred.
Mayor Eric Garcetti suspended the department's recruiting process in March after it was found that about a third of 70 recruits who took part in a recent training class had relatives in the department.
