WINTERS, Calif. (KCRA) —Police are searching for the gunman who fatally shot a woman in the head in downtown Winters Monday morning.

The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Railroad Avenue.

Police said a woman in her 30s was sitting in the driver seat of a black BMW SUV when she was shot in the head.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Winters Police Chief Sergio Guiterrez told KCRA 3's David Bienick he thinks he knows the shooter, but is waiting on releasing a name and suspect description.

"I would definitely say he is a threat to anybody, considering a firearm was used in this situation," Guiterrez said. "At this point he is considered a threat to the public."

The gunman was seen getting into a tan vehicle after the shooting.

The search for the gunman prompted Winters-area schools to go on lockdown.

Lockdowns were lifted at all schools except one, Waggoner Elementary School, by 1 p.m.

Police said Waggoner Elementary School remained on lockdown because the victim's daughter is a student at the school.
