A vehicle theft suspect had to be detained by a K9 unit in Redding early Wednesday morning after he ran from police, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Joseph Lee Deshields was seen by sheriff’s deputies driving erratically on Highway 273 near Westwood Village in Redding. The suspect fled at high speeds after deputies signaled the suspect to pull the 1997 GMC pickup truck over.

After running over several planter boxes in the Win-River parking lot, the suspect ditched the vehicle and attempted to lose the trailing officers in the dense brush.

Officers surrounded the area and deployed K9 officer Jax who detained the suspect a short time later.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital to be treated for wounds sustained in the arrest.

The suspect was booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges of evading arrest, resisting arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle and previous warrants.
