CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Jury selection is expected to begin today in the trial of a white Charlotte police officer accused of fatally shooting an unarmed black man who was looking for help.

Randall Kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the September, 2013, death of 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell, a former Florida A&M football player.

Ferrell had pounded on the door of a home after his car went off the road.

The homeowner thought he was a robber and called 911. Of the three officers who responded, only Kerrick fired his gun, hitting Ferrell 10 times. His attorney says he acted in self-defense.
