Jury selection is under way in eureka for the man accused of torturing and murdering a catholic priest two years ago.

The Humboldt County District Attorney says it could take two weeks to seat a jury for the case that shocked the North Coast community.

Gary Lee Bullock is accused of breaking into the church rectory on New Year’s Day 2014, and torturing reverend Eric Freed of Saint Bernerd’s Catholic Church before beating him to death.

Freed’s body was found later that day after he did not show up for morning mass.

The 46-year old Bullock has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. That means a jury must determine whether bullock is guilty.

If so, the jury must determine in a separate trial whether the defendant was legally insane at the time of the killing.
