A Butte County Jury will return to court Thursday to continue deliberating the fate of a former Butte County Sheriff's Deputy charged with trying to meet up with a young girl for sex.

28-year-old Earl Klapperich was arrested in May of last year after a sting operation that involved texts by an undercover officer impersonating as 14-year-old girl. Before the jury began deliberating Monday, Klapperich took the stand in his defense stating he had never intended to have sex with the girl because he claimed he was gay.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey told Action News Now “Klapperich came out to avoid going in.”

Prosecutors also pointed to his marriage and evidence of past sexual encounters with other women. If convicted Klapperich faces four years in prison.
