LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal judge says a bipolar woman who was repeatedly punched by a California Highway Patrol officer has been exploited by her lawyer.

The judge says it's "unconscionable" that attorney Caree Harper netted more than $600,000 of Marlene Pinnock's $1.5 million settlement from the CHP.

Judge Otis Wright made the comments Wednesday during hearing regarding the financial settlement.

Harper was not in court but later told the Los Angeles Times that she disagrees that Pinnock was exploited.

The attorney was sanctioned earlier this month for refusing to say how she met Pinnock and when she learned her client might be mentally incompetent.

Pinnock was recorded on video being punched while resisting arrest after she walked into Los Angeles freeway lanes last July.

No criminal charges were filed.
