Shasta County State of Jefferson supporters held a town hall meeting Sunday to discuss the progress and future plans of a movement to break away from California.
Members of the "Jefferson Declaration Committee" are calling for representation of the rural counties in Northern California. The movement pushes for a government model that provides one state senator and at least one assembly person for each county in the new state, no matter how big or small.
Committee member Mark Baird said Sunday that "without representation it doesn't matter what party you're in. You're not going to get what you need. So we want direct representation for every county in Northern California, and we don't have that now".
Seven counties, including Tehama, Glenn and Yuba, have already publicly declared their support for the State of Jefferson.
