The Butte County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation after an Oroville man was found dead inside a Butte County Jail cell Thursday night.
53-year-old Rick Vermace was found unresponsive in a sobering cell just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Jail staff and Butte County paramedics attempted to save his life, but Vermace was pronounced dead just after 7 p.m.
Vermace had been arrested on suspicion of public intoxication by Oroville Police a little over an hour before he was found unresponsive in the cell.
Vermace was evaluated by medical staff when he was booked into the jail around 5:30 p.m. and it was determined that despite being under the influence of a controlled substance, he was not suffering from any life-threatening condition.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Butte County Coroner's Office.
According to the Sheriff's Office there was no indication that force was used during Vermace's arrest or incarceration, and no signs of trauma have been located.
