A 20-year-old Sacramento woman remains in critical condition after she and two others were injured in a rock slide during a new year's day climb of Mt. Shasta.
Olsya Karniayenka, 20, was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding after all three were rescued with the help of the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office and CHP's Northern Division Air Operations.
The other two hikers, a male and a female, both age 20, were also taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of serious to minor injuries. One of the climbersreportedly used a cell phone to call for help.
Sheriff Jon Lopey warned climbers that climbing conditions are particularly hazardous because of a lack of snowfall and cold tempertures. Among the hazards are that so many more loose rocks are exposed.
