On Monday the Redding Fire Department and paramedics responded to a medical call at the La Quinta Inn on Hilltop Drive in Redding. Emergency response personnel eventually transported a two-month-old infant girl to a local hospital, then airlifted to Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento for treatment for a brain bleed, according to the Redding Police Department’s press release.

Yesterday at approximately 5:30 a.m., 33-year-old Stephen Daniel Rehmeier of Canby, Calif., came to the Redding Police Department with information regarding the injured child. Rehimer eventually told investigators he was caring for the injured infant and her twin sibling at the hotel while their mother was at the pool. Rehmeier became frustrated when the victim would not stop crying and told officers he physically assaulted the baby, according to the release.

Redding Police Investigators drove to Sacramento where they met with medical staff at Sutter Memorial Hospital where they learned the victim remains in critical condition. Medical staff could not speculate on the prognosis of the infant’s condition. Investigators also met with the victim’s mother who told them Rehmeier confided in her that he had harmed the child. The release indicated Rehmeier is not the child’s father.

Rehmeier was booked into Shasta County Jail on felony child abuse charges where he is being held on a $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in the Shasta County Superior Court later today.
