Hwy 70 Reopens in East Butte County After Fatal Big Rig Accident

(UPDATE) 12:10 p.m.-Hwy 70 near Belden is now open in both directions following a fatal big rig accident and roadwork repair, according to Caltrans.

Hwy 70 in east Butte County is currently closed due to a fatal big rig accident. The road is closed between the Greenville Wye in Plumas County and Jarbo Gap in Butte County. Crews from Caltrans District 2 are also on the scene.

According to Caltrans, the accident occurred at 3:32 a.m. at Chambers Creek, approximately four miles southwest of Belden. The crash subsequently started a fire. Eastbound Hwy 70 is closed at Big Bend Road and Westbound 70 at Greenville Wye.

According to CHP, an unidentified male driver was driving a Freightliner Tractor Trailer on Hwy 70 west of Chambers Creek when the front of his rig struck a large rock on the roadway. The driver reportedly lost control of the big rig and slid into a rock wall. CHP indicated the trailer jackknifed and ruptured a fuel tank. Both the tractor and trailer became fully engulfed in flames and the driver was unable to exit his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP is still investigating the crash.
