Hwy 70 Reopens after Fatal Traffic Collision

(UPDATE) 5:10 p.m.- Hwy 70 near Power House Hill Road has reopened, according to Caltrans.

Action News Now reporter Renee Crane has confirmed with CHP officials at the scene two people have died in an accident on SR 70 near Palermo just after 1 p.m. this afternoon.

According to CHP, a gold pickup truck was traveling southbound on SR 70 when for reasons yet to be determined the driver drifted over to the other side of the road and made a hard left in front of a semi truck. The accident occurred just south of Powerhouse Hill Road. Both occupants of the truck, a male and a female, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi truck was taken to Oroville Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Southbound SR 70 traffic is being diverted to eastbound Powerhouse Hill Road and northbound traffic is being diverted to westbound E. Gridley Road, according to CHP.

CHP has not indicated when the roadway will reopen.
