Hwy 273 Reopens after Fatal Accident, Victim Identified

(UPDATE) 4:30 p.m.- The Shasta County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim killed in a fatal traffic accident on Hwy 273 in Redding today as 69-year-old Sandra Vanlarson of Redding, according to Action News Now Reporter Jake O’Brien. The man who was driving the Ford Explorer that hit Vanlarson has been identified as 29-year-old Darren Horn of Cottonwood. Horn was transported to the hospital for minor injuries, but the Redding Police Department is investigating whether or not he may have been using prescription drugs prior to the collision. He has not been arrested but the accident is still under investigation. Caltrans stated this evening Hwy 273 reopened around 3:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) 11:32 a.m.- Reporter Jake O’Brien has gathered more information on the fatal traffic accident which has closed the northbound lanes of Hwy 273 in Redding.

According to what O’Brien gathered from emergency response personnel at the scene, a woman was driving on Westwood Avenue at approximately 9:30 a.m. this morning in a black Hyundai. As the woman was turning left onto Hwy 273, a man in a Ford Explorer ran a red light and collided into the side of the woman’s car. The momentum of the crash pushed her car into a Honda, but the individual in that car was uninjured. The woman in the black Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man in the Ford Explorer was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Law enforcement officials at the scene stated he will also be evaluated to see if was under the influence of prescription medication at the time of the accident.

Both northbound lanes of Hwy 273 remain closed at this time with no clear indication of when they will be reopened.

(UPDATE) 10:35 a.m. - Northbound lanes of Hwy 273 remain closed at Girvan Road and one southbound lane is also closed at S. Bonneyview Road, according to Caltrans.

All northbound lanes of Hwy 273 in Redding at Girvan Road are closed after a fatal traffic collision, according to Action News Now Reporter Jake O'Brien who is at the scene.

Initial reports indicate the accident occurred just after 9:30 this morning and one person has been killed. We have yet to confirm any additional injuries.

Caltrans has yet to establish a time then the roadway will reopen.
