Husband of missing Chico woman arraigned on animal cruelty charges

The husband of a missing Chico woman appeared in a Glenn County courtroom Monday morning to be arraigned on five animal cruelty charges in connection to the death of a Rottweiler.

Zir Weems was arrested Thursday September 25 on animal cruelty charges, authorities say his negligent treatment of a Rottweiler led to the dog's death.

Weems asked Judge Donald Byrd for a court appointed attorney and the hearing was continued. Weems be back in court on Friday October 3rd, where it is expected he will enter a plea.

Weems' wife Angelica, 23, has been missing since Saturday September 13, and just hours after she was last seen, Zir Weems was found with multiple self-inflicted stab wounds.

The Willows Police Department is continuing to investigate her disappearance and is asking that anyone with information call Sgt. Troy McIntyre at 934-3456.
