Authorities say they found significant amounts of marijuana and butane in a Thermalito duplex that went up in flames Sunday, and believe a honey oil operation caused the explosion.
Butte County Special Enforcement Detective Doug Patterson told Action News Now, 30-year-old Brandon Qassem was producing butane honey oil for his personal use and to sell.
Firefighters found Qassem and two teenagers suffering from severe burns. All three remain in critical condition Monday.
The explosion was so significant it blew out several windows and part of a wall.
Qassem's wife and one-year-old child were not home at the time of the explosion, but authorities have since taken the toddler into protective custody.
Investigators say they plan to file criminal charges against Qassem.
