A Redding Police Officer is currently on paid leave per police protocol after shooting a homeless man under the Cypress Street Bridge last night.
The officer encountered the homeless man, identified as 39-year-old Joseph Anthony Galbraith, on the bank of the Sacramento River near Park Marina Drive just before 6:30 p.m. According to the Redding Police Department, Galbraith told the officer he had a knife as he advanced towards the officer. As a result the officer shot Galbraith in the upper torso. He was eventually taken into custody and transported to Mercy Medical Center for his non-life threatening injury.
The officer was not injured during the incident.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit is currently handling the investigation and anticipates releasing more information early next week.
Neither the Redding Police Department nor the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed or denied finding a knife on Galbraith’s person or on the bank where the incident occurred. They also haven’t officially stated why the officer was on the bank of the river.
