Hmong statue vandalized in Chico

Vandals appeared to have beheaded the statue of General Vang Pao sometime between Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning.

City Officials removed the remainder of the statue by Saturday evening to preserve what was left and see if it can be repaired.

It's not clear if the vandalism is connected to Saturday afternoon's shootout in north Chico or the Hmong New Year Festival at Bidwell Junior High.

Investigators said after interviewing the suspects connected to Saturday's incident, it would be wise to cancel the final day of the Hmong New Year festival at Bidwell Junior High.

Vang Pao was a Lieutenant General in the Royal Lao Army and was a leader in the Hmong community in the U.S.
