SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County has seen a spike in the number of people killed in hit-and-run crashes.

The Union-Tribune reports Sunday that 23 people died in hit-and-run collisions in 2014, up from seven a year earlier.

It was the highest number of fatal hit-and-runs in the county since 2004. Most of the victims were pedestrians.

More than 3,200 people have been injured in felony hit-and-run crashes in San Diego County over the last five years.

Authorities say the cases are tough to solve especially if there are few witnesses or little evidence. Democratic Assemblyman Mike Gatto has proposed a bill to try to get the public to help solve hit-and-runs by having authorities post alert messages on freeway signs.
