Historic weather vane discovered during Shasta Co. probation search

A weather vane that once stood atop the Diamond Hotel in Kennett, Ca. a town later submerged under Shasta Lake was discovered during a probation search Tuesday.

Shasta County Sheriff’s deputies made the discovery after Richard Thomas, on probation and in the work release program, was arrested Tuesday evening. Thomas, riding his motorcycle, led deputies on a short pursuit that ended on Kimberly Road shortly after 5:00 p.m.

Thomas was on probation for possession of stolen property.

Deputies conducted a search of his home and found 3.5 ounces of methamphetamine and other narcotic paraphernalia.

During the search, Deputies recognized the antique weather vane in the yard. The copper weather vane has significant historical value and was reported stolen in February 2014.

Thomas and his girlfriend Charlotte Wimmer, who lives with him, were arrested and booked into Shasta County Jail.
