A man who reported being shot by an unknown gunman on the 100 block of Hilltop Drive in Redding on February 1 reportedly admitted to investigators he intentionally shot himself with a high powered rifle while inside his home.

Just after 8:15 p.m. that Saturday night, Redding Police Officers arrived at Shasta Regional Medical Center to get a statement from 34-year-old Brent Thomas Posada. Posada told the officers he was shot in the abdomen while standing on the sidewalk on Hilltop Drive when he was approached by a black male who pointed a gun at his head. Posada then told officers he pushed the suspect’s arm to the side and the gun fired.

Officers canvassed the area that night but could find evidence consistent with Posada’s story. Investigators also examined photos of his injuries and examined the clothes Posada wore the night of the incident which also didn’t support Posada’s claim. During an interview with investigators today, Posada reportedly admitted to detectives he intentionally shot himself.

Posada was not arrested but the investigation is being forwarded to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for review regarding Posada’s false police report.
