Another deadly crash on Highway 99 between Chico and Durham. It is still unknown at this time what actually caused this car to flip, but the effects of the rollover were deadly.
It happened around 12:45 this afternoon. Two 19-year-old men, in a 1998 Ford Contour, were traveling Southbound on Highway 99, just South of Neal Road.
According to CHP officials, the car was traveling the speed limit, when for an unknown reason the driver swerved into the dirt center divide. The driver then over corrected, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times, landing upside down in the median.
Although both young men were wearing their seat belts, the passenger was killed, and apparently ejected and was crushed by the car. The driver was rushed to Enloe Medical Center with minor injuries.
CHP Officer Paul Sadowski says, "As far as alcohol and drugs are concerned, we are looking in to that and the big mystery is just what caused them to veer off in the first place." Traffic was delayed on 99 for about an hour as emergency crews cleaned up the area.
Today's crash comes less than a month after women died in a solo rollover crash not far from this location on Durham Pentz Road. She too was only 19 years old. And there's still no official word on what caused her van to lose control.
