You may have noticed some construction on Highway 99 while driving through Chico.
Starting at Highway 32 and going to East First Ave., Caltrans has been working for the past two years to add a third lane on Highway 99. They’re also adding 14-foot soundwalls.
Officials believe this construction will ultimately make driving on Highway 99 safer. But when Action News Now spoke with homeowners who lived near the construction, they said their roads have actually become more dangerous since construction started.
“The fact that they don’t even go down to the end of the street but make a u-turn; they just back up block traffic,” homeowner Nancy Symons said of drivers near her neighborhood on E. First Ave. and Holben Ave. in Chico. “It’s really a hazardous situation when they do that.”
The cost of this construction is about $35 million.
The first part of the soundwall should be hung sometime next week and Caltrans expects the entire construction to be complete by August 2014.
